How to Use NFC Business Cards at Networking Events and Exhibitions

A networking event lasts a few hours. The contacts you make can last years. But only if they actually make it into someone’s phone — and that’s where most paper cards fail. Here’s how to get more from every event with an NFC smart card.

Before the event

Update your profile

Before any significant event, spend five minutes reviewing your digital profile. Is your title current? Are all links working? Have you added your most recent social profile? Your profile is your first impression — it should be accurate.

Add event-specific links if relevant

If you’re exhibiting or presenting, consider whether there’s a specific page on your website you’d like people to land on. A landing page for the event, a product page, or a booking form can be more useful than your homepage.

If you have Plus: set up your lead form

TAP 2 Connect Plus includes a lead capture form that pops up when someone taps your card. Before the event, check that the form is configured correctly and that you know where submitted leads are being stored. Test it with your own phone.

At the event

Lead with the card, not the conversation

There’s a natural moment in every introduction — after you’ve shaken hands and said your names — when business cards would traditionally be exchanged. That’s your moment. Rather than talking about your card, just do it: “Here, tap this on your phone.” Let the technology make the impression.

Showing people who haven’t seen one before

Not everyone has encountered an NFC business card. When you see confusion, demonstrate: open your own phone, show them the profile, and then let them tap it themselves. The experience of seeing their phone respond to a card is memorable and usually generates a positive reaction that carries into the conversation.

Handling non-NFC phones

If someone’s phone doesn’t respond to the tap (older phones, iPhones with NFC disabled, some international models), point to the QR code on the front of the card. Open their camera and let them scan it. Same result, different method. Having both options on every card means you’re never caught out.

Using your wallet pass when you don’t have your card

Left your physical card in your other jacket? Your Apple or Google Wallet pass is always with you. Open your wallet, show the QR code on screen, and ask them to scan it. Your full profile opens exactly as it would from the physical card.

Lead capture at busy events

At exhibitions and trade shows, the volume of interactions makes a lead capture form invaluable. With TAP 2 Connect Plus:

  1. The prospect taps your card
  2. A short form appears on their phone (name, company, email, phone)
  3. They fill it in and hit submit — takes under a minute
  4. Your details are saved on their phone
  5. Their details appear in your leads database
  6. Both parties leave with what they came for

At the end of the day, instead of a pocket full of other people’s cards that need to be transcribed, you have a downloaded spreadsheet of every person you spoke to.

After the event

Follow up while the conversation is fresh

The biggest mistake at networking events is not following up. You’ve done the hard work of making the connection — if you have lead capture data, use it within 24 hours while the conversation is still in memory. A short email that references something specific from your conversation converts far better than a generic “great to meet you” sent a week later.

Connect on LinkedIn

If you’ve shared your LinkedIn URL via your card, there’s a good chance the other person has looked at your profile. Send a LinkedIn connection request the same evening, personalising the message with a reference to where you met.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Only having one card: For events where you’re exhibiting, consider having your card mounted or placed in a visible holder on your stand so visitors can tap without you having to be present
  • Not mentioning the card: Don’t hide it at the end of a conversation. Use it as a talking point at the start
  • Forgetting the QR code: Always point it out to people who’ve struggled with the NFC tap — don’t just move on
  • Not updating leads: If you have Plus, check your leads dashboard the day after the event and add notes while the conversations are fresh
